I have been a linux user for 6 years (since 2001, which also means I have never used Windows XP), and I have found that a real Frequently Asked Question in many sites has always been what to choose? KDE or GNOME? people always asks for KDE vs GNOME reviews, and most of them are really biased.
In most of the places this normal question ends up in a flame war, and the result is: the newcomers get so confused about what desktop to choose that they go for the ones that shouted louder… or they simply go back to where they came from.
Since I begun to use linux I choosed KDE, but I have always gotten the impression that GNOME is winning the battle, my question has always been: Why?
Every time I have previously logged into GNOME to try it, has not been a satisfactory experience, and I ended up coming back to KDE in less than one week. Until now, with the release of GNOME 2.20 and keeping an eye on the development of KDE4 one thing I can tell: GNOME is approaching to KDE’s features, and KDE is approaching to GNOME’s simplicity. They might never merge, but now I’m sure they will converge.
So, Now I’m going to deeply move to GNOME and I will keep there (at least until KDE4 is out), I'm documenting my experiences.
