Re: trying to install beryl please help

If your trying to install Beryl, I'd say the easiest, fastest, and safest way would be to use Adept Manager. It may be an older version, but should still work. If you just prefer to compile and install, what does the line say where you first begin getting errors; it should say it cannot open, run, or find something.

However, Compiz-fusion seems to be replacing Beryl in Gutsy (and in general), so I wouldn't invest too much time or energy in it

Do you have the gcc package installed? If not, you can install it by opening Konsole and typing 'sudo apt-get install gcc' (ignore the ' marks, they are only for reference).

Open Adept Manager (click the k-menu, highlight 'system', click 'Adept Manager'). Type gcc into the search bar and thumb through all the packages that come up; make sure all of the gcc-*-source, gcc-*, gcc-*-base, and libgcc packages are installed, if not, install them.

Thinking back a few weeks, I tried to install Beryl on my Feisty system - I'm currently running the Gutsy beta. I had a hard time with it and decided to ditch the whole project and wait for Compiz-fusion, which is just Compiz with Beryl's Emerald theme manager. Compiz-fusion is not in the repositories of Fiesty, but is in Gutsy; I'm, in fact, using it right now. If your patient, just wait "2" more weeks for the official release of Gutsy (the best idea) and install Compiz-fusion Or, just install Beryl through Adept Manager.

Edit: In Adept Manager, click the package your interested in and choose 'Request Install', then, looking at the top left, choose 'Apply Changes'; it would be a good idea to choose 'Preview Changes' before you commit them, I've accidentally deleted my system before neglecting to do so :-(
