Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

    Good News.

I called a relative who has a fax and told her that I'll try to send fax. I asked her to answer the phone and press the start fax button (since my last try was to a fax that I was waiting for 6-7 rings without reply and I know I set it up to 5 rings reply). I play it smart. I had the phone on to listen what happens.

    So here are the results:

So I called her after and asked her if she got it. She got it (she couldn't print it though).
I'll try again the same thing in the morning with another fax and I'll ask to receive fax to check it if everything is OK.

I was waiting for long time the synchronization now. Do I have a problem or it's normal?

        "Is there something wrong? "

There is a problem but what it is I don't know, at this point.

"Do I have to make changes to my modem again?""

I don't think so. The original issue of trying to get the system to recognize and use your modem is resolved. Something else is going on now. I don't fax so I will need some time to look into efax and configuring it. At this point I wouldn't play around with the modem itself because all your modem options were softmodems/winmodems. These are always tricky with linux. If you know someone who has a true controller based external serial modem, rather than these controllerless soft/win modems, you might have better luck trying that because linux support for such modems is much more solid. On the other hand I'm not suggesting you go out and buy a controller based external serial modem because I can't assure you that it would solve all issues.

I will do some research over the next day or two and post on whether I find a solid lead.

Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

Well, today I tried to send the same fax to another number and I made it. Then I asked them to send it back and the first try it failed but she sent it again and it was success. So I guess I have to use it once or twice to check where if it works fine or not.

If it's easy for you, can we make a summary of the solution? I followed the directions of the site and I installed the modem driver. Then I gave some commands (and if it's easy describe me what they did). So now I'm able to use the fax.

          Thanks in advance.

Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have been busier than normal the last few days.

Are you using the efax-gtk gui?
In file->settings->params tab under Other Params: enter

            -ozzzz

with the dash included. That is a lower case letter o and 4 z's.
This will increase command delay considerably.

In file -> settings->modem tab under Capabilites enter

            1,1,0,2,0,0,0,0

This will keep all defaults except reducing the bit rate down to 4800. There seems to be a lot of trouble negotiating bit rate.

Hopefully this will have some beneficial effect on the failure rate. If it doesn't seem to help I may look into alternate initialization strings.

If you read this again diamond_gr could you post back as to whether you found a solution or not?

                Hello opie,

sorry for delay. I was busy and I was away from PC last few days.

Well, I did everything you told me. It's working fine I guess. Sometimes it cannot send the fax but I cannot listen if it's trying to connect or not. But I try second time and it sends it. I think I'm OK. If I face some problem, I'll let you know.

                Thanks for your help.
