In Networking the options for setting up a modem are greyed out and I cannot set or autodetect a modem.

What do I need to do to get the modem going:

    Details:
    Sony PCG-FR820 laptop
    ubuntu 2.6.12-10-386 3.4.5

Scanmodem gives me this as the modem:
    [The controller: 10b9:5451 ALI 5451
is capable of supporting soft modem chips from AT LEAST manufacturers:
    AgereSystems
    Smartlink
    cat: invalid option -- a
Try `cat --help' for more information.
    A PCMCIA modem is detected.]
