    Problem With BBC Video Stream

I recently had to reinstall Ubuntu on my computer as a result of which I can't seem to get the BBC's streaming videos to work properly in Konqueror. I'm using Kubuntu in Gutsy Gibbon/Gorilla as my default DE.

    Any help would be apprciated

Hmmmm. My quick check of the BBC site indicates you have the choice of Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. I tried RealPlayer (in Firefox) and it won't play. I don't think they like Linux users ....

I had it working before, but I can't for the life of me remember how.

Oh... And they'd better bloody well start learning to like us

Maybe a stupid question but did you reinstall the codecs and plugins?

I'm not sure. Since I don't really remember what they were.

Plus my old system was a mix of Gnome and KDE, and I want a purely KDE one now. And I seem to recall a lot of the plugins were in GStreamer, which I'm guessing is Gnome.

I can get it working in Konqueror with "kmplayer_konq_plugins" and "kmplayer_base" and "xine_ffmpeg" from the repositories. From a default Kubuntu installation, you will only need to add xine_ffmpeg as the first two are installed already.

(KDE apps tens to use xine rather than GStreamer codecs).
(KMPlayer is a video player that is integrated with Konqueror)

Then in BBC, open with 'Windows Media Player' and it should open with the KMPlayer plugin automatically.

I have libxine_ffmpg installed but no sign of xine_ffmpeg

Yeh, sorry Mark, you have the right one. What happens when you try to play?

Re: Problem With BBC Video Stream

Hmm. It seems to be working now. Using xine rather than Mplayer though.

                  Weird.

ETA: I'm wondering if changing site preference from RP to WiMP helped?

Re: Problem With BBC Video Stream

Yes it prob did. I can't get realplayer stuff to play unless i install the realplayer package in the repositories. I prefer to use the WMP option as i think it is slightly better quality.

The weird part is, I'm pretty sure I'd already set it to WiMP.

Oh well, at least it's working now.

                      Thanks

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Neither xine-ffmpeg nor libxine-ffmpeg are available in the Gutsy 64-bit repos. Guess we're waiting ....

I'm not sure about Gutsy 64 but I thought it was libxine-extracodecs for the multimedia stuff in feisty.

                            dibl,
It's just libxine-ffmpeg (xine_ffmpeg was my memory playing tricks). The same package for Gstreamer applications (GStreamer0.10-ffmpeg) allows playback of wmv, mp3, etc in gtk apps such as Totem and Rhythmbox. So i guess it must be a big prob for the 64 bit users, unless there are other packages that cover such formats? Out of interest, how do 64 bit Kubuntu users get mp3 files to play in Amarok if libxine_ffmpeg is not available?

I just watched an excerpt from the new UBL tape from BBC in Firefox with mplayer. No problem. I selected Windows Media Player.
