Unable to play Ripped CD audio and a possible fix

Not sure where this goes, but wanted to get it out there because I know others are fighting the same problem:

Just built an AMD64 on Asus A8N SLI-SE and installed 64 bit 7.04 from DVD. Couple of days into it and decided to try ripping some music. Worked that night, but the next day could no longer rip anything playable. Files were full of distortion, beeps, echos, etc. Original files continued to play fine.

I kept playing with this and at times could rip music while other times could not. Eventually figured out that it was a DMA issue. With DMA enabled, the newly ripped music was unplayable.

    sudo hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc

And I can rip and play to my hearts content.

I leave this to the experts to figure out. Have no idea what was turning DMA off during those rare sessions when I was able to rip one off!

    DVD all/in/one is Sony DRU-170C
