Re: Shipped Kubuntu feisty not working!!!

If you don't have an installed version of kubuntu you cannot install / run envy. So my bet would be to get the alternate installation cd, as dible pointed out, and install from there using the vesa driver and then install / run envy.

Being a bit biased about feisty, but that is only me, I would get the gusty live cd and try it if it boots in any mode you should be safe. Then get the alternate cd and install from there.
    My reasoning?
    - Even though it is still beta (testing) I have been using gutsy as my main working OS for the last months and have found it very stable and much nicer to my hardware.
    - Using the live cd as a test gives you an idea of if it likes your hardware.
    - Gutsy has much more recent drivers for video, etc.
    - Gutsy will be finalized within the next few weeks so all you have to do is update regularly and you will be all set.

The gutsy tribe 5 cd's are here:
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/gutsy/tribe-5/

Just my 2 cents worth and I wish you good luck.

as dible pointed out, and install from there using the vesa
don't think the vesa mode would work. didn't worked for me if my memory is right.

The default driver on feisty crash most of time with ati cards, you need to install other one to think about starting kde.

So now question. you're on the menu of the live cd and want to start the command line, how do you do this ?

Yeah, using an other distro might be an idea.

Re: Shipped Kubuntu feisty not working!!!

Well I contacted a professional friend regarding this issue, he uses the Feisty Ubuntu with an ATI card, he tried but didn't work, He said that even the live CD is not working and so he tried the Alternate CD and he installed it, but the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 was not recognized by Ubuntu Feisty (even Kubuntu)!! and he tried the Kubuntu Gutsy too, and we faced the same issue!!!! please I need to inform the Kubuntu Developer regarding this issue!!! its really disappointing issue for all newbies!!!, by the way the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 is working very good with the old Dapper distro!!! I am using the live CD now!!!

          For bug reporting:
          https://launchpad.net/

I did a search there and found no hits.

          Edit:
I just did a search for
          ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
on the forums for the two other distros I am using/testing. Mepis and Mint.
I didn't gat anything at mint and only one hit at mepis and not a very usefull one at that. The same search here in kubuntu gave a few hits. So why not check them out and see if they can be of help.

Re: Shipped Kubuntu feisty not working!!!

Hey, i finnaly found that how-to again when looking for someting else.
Funny how you can find things when you're no longer looking for them.

it was on the french kubuntu site...
            http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=85994&p=1

            1. At first screen , typeF6
            2. replace " splash --" by "single" in the boot options
            3. type "enter"
            4. Command line should appear. Might take a while.
            Type :
            "apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx" <enter> (install ATI drivers)
            "aticonfig --initial" <enter> (settings)
            "aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv" <enter> (case sensitive! )
            5. type " "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start") Long too.

and there, hopefully, kde should start

Re: Shipped Kubuntu feisty not working!!!

              Hi there,
Thanks for your concern with my issue. A friend of mine installed the Ubuntu Feisty the Alternative CD and he tried all the mentioned solutions but its still not working. its showing the command lines and no desktop. I noticed the website:
              http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/l...ux-radeon.html
it got the driver for ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400 for Linux.... I will try it, and I will try the EowynCarter above mentioned post.....
I really like to report this but to the developers at the Launchpad.net website before the Gutsy is finally released....

This is an installation from the link:
                  http://www.mikesplanet.net/2007/04/i...4-ati-x-cards/
(Many people are having problems installing Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on machine with ATI X**** series video cards. This is caused by this bug that unfortunately could not fixed before the release of Ubuntu 7.04.

This quick guide will get Feisty installed and X.org 7.2 up and running.

Boot using PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD for Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
Start text mode installer and install Ubuntu/Kubuntu.
                  Finish Install and reboot.
Update package list and upgrade any packages needed.
                  sudo apt-get update
                  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Install fglrx closed source driver for ATI video cards.
                  sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
                  Update loaded modules.
                  sudo depmod -a
                  Configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf
                  sudo aticonfig --initial
                  sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
                  Reboot
Ubuntu 7.04 should now boot into GDM/KDM.)

what I tried is to install the Ubuntu Feisty Alternative CD, then install the ATI driver from the link:
                  http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/l...ux-radeon.html
