    first time install

    Hi,

I've installed Kubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn and it is the first time that I am in the Linux world and I'm trying to see how things work...

I've tried installing a program for the first time using adept and I can't install anything (by the way, are all the programs listed in the installer available within Kubuntu or do I have to install them via internet). I can't select a single program. Visually, I can remove what I want (text in black) and can't install the rest (text in grey). I thought that maybe, I needed root administration, so I went into user management and applied it, but it still doesn't work.

    What is going wrong?

    Thanks
    crl6904

You think that it might be the "initial update"?

If it's the inital updates and your anything like me, when the Java agreement shows up you just go to next. Then it tells you it couldn't be installed correctly because it has "do you agree to these rules?" at the very bottom of that agreement which you have to accept then go to the next page. I thought this was a bit stupid personally because if I didn't then why would I be downloading it anyways..., but maybe that's the problem? Or maybe that'll help out someone else who stumbles across the pages.

        Cheers,
        Ash

I think it is the initial updates......... I have to first link the modem (in my case my cell) then internet.....and then check for updates....

Hope what you said helps me. Let's just say that I have just started to use kubuntu and am very confused. I'm not used to all this "freedom", with the other OS you simply put the CD, USB stick, etc.. and it goes by itself. Here it isn't so and I guess that is probably the biggest reason why I decided to install kubuntu.

          Thanks

            hi,

I'm still trying to get the initial update but am not able to get into internet. I am using a cellular phone to go to the net but can't get kubuntu to see it ad a modem.

            I tried this solution : "http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Hardware/M...ht=%28umts%29", but :
            1) I don't have the cdc_acm file,
            2) I tried to write the following command line "sudo gedit /etc/modules but the command gedit does not exist
            3) I found that kppp needs a certain .conf file, that I do not know where to get it.

            I'm fairly confused....

            thanks

gedit is the gnome text editor, for Ubuntu. For Kubuntu, you want kate.

              Code:
              kdesu kate /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
              Code:
              kdesu kate /etc/modules
              Code:
              kdesu kate /etc/modprobe.d/options

Yes - by proper usage of commands:

                  Code:
                  kdesu kate /etc/resolv.conf
(The "bad device" stuff is irrelevant.)

It is probably a silly question but I'm curious. What is the difference between sudo and kdesu? From what I understand sudo is "superuser do", but what is kdesu?

                    Thanks

I think it's the "KDE Super User". It's what you're supposed to use to run a KDE app in Super User mode. It is analagous to sudo for CLI commands.

Or in purely 'newbie' terms, kdesu is the system superuser for launching an application with super user rights as apposed to sudo which executes a command as the super user.

I looked at the file /proc/bus/usb/devices and found that my cell can be seen but does not give any info about the driver...

                            I'm really stuck

                            Does anybody have any ideas?
