If you're attracted to the notion of leaving Windows behind, VWare Player works pretty well to run your "hardcore" Windows apps in a Linux X window. But you still need to install your Windows OS on your VM Player virtual machine.

Is that app fast and reliable enough for gaming? Because all I need to use Windows for is gaming and drafting (CADkey and Solidworks).

Specifically, I play City of Villains, which does not work thru WINE.

It's pretty fast, although nothing will beat Windows for a native Windows app. I have benchmarked VM Player against Win4Lin with my genealogy database, TMG, which also would not work in Wine. It runs 15% faster in VM Player than in Win4Lin, and seems comparable in speed to how it runs under Win XP (I really should benchmark it against the native Win XP, but I haven't booted Win XP in months). I also got Motorola PhoneTools running in VM Player last week, connected to my Razr cell phone via USB cable, which I never could quite master with Moto4Lin. 8)

Very cool. I'll try that tonight, right after I get my wireless card working.

And I'm pretty sure the wireless works, but I fell asleep at around 2 in the morning with Automatix still working at installing things for me.

Would you be able to install Windoze from scratch on a real machine with that "disk" alone?

anyone of you guys tried VirtualBox?
not that i would ever want to boot windoze.
but other linuxes...yeah...it'd be nice to try things out.
i'm tired of triple booting and stuff.

If I had a previous version of Windows installed or had an older install disk, then yes, I could. I managed to get my hands on the iso for Windows 95, so if this fake install works in exactly the same way as a real one, I can pull it off.

No, only Win4Lin and VMWare Player (successfully) and Wine ( ). But, in addition to VirtualBox, I've also heard very good things about Parallels, wrt running Windows apps. I'm so happy with VM Player, I don't think I'm going to mess with the other ones, at this point (thank you UnicornRider!).
