    Beryl

I was thinking of trying "Beryl". However, apt doesn't list it so I'm guessing that means it isn't really supported. That's o.k. I guess but installing it from source looks a little fiddly as well, the Beryl website has a lot of different tarballs and I'm not sure which ones I want.
Is there some easy way to install the most common features of Beryl? Maybe I just need to get apt looking at another repository or something?

      Re: Beryl

I used the synaptic package manager for my installation. I didn't have great luck at first because I didn't get all the different packages required. This post has a list of the packages that got it working for me. Go down to dibl's response where he lists the packages required. Make sure you have the graphics driver installed correctly and you can check the beryl-project website for supported devices.

            Re: Beryl

Ubuntu and Kubuntu are very closely related. The kernel is the same. The packages are slightly different. Ubuntu is Gnome based and Kubuntu is KDE based. Xubuntu is part of the same family, Xfce based and Edubuntu targeted at the educational system. Now Fluxubuntu is joining the family - based on Fluxbox.

There are some small, but important, differences in the packages. For example Ubuntu used Gedit as the text manager and Kubuntu uses Kate. So if you see an Ubuntu reference to Gedit you know EITHER to change it to Kate OR load Gedit onto Kubuntu (yes, it is done and does work).

So pointing someone to Ubuntu is not wrong. Beryl can be, and is, installed onto Kubuntu, mostly following Ubuntu instructions...

              Re: Beryl

i tried installing beryl from this link: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I..._Edgy_with_XGL

i get nothing with "Now add the Beryl Project's repository to /etc/apt/sources.list. This can be done using the Synaptic or Adept graphical interfaces, or from the command line. The line to be added is

deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ edgy main" and i get "bash: deb: command not found"

so i went to the beryl page, downloaded the tar.gz of each file in 0.2.1 release at http://www.beryl-project.org/releases.php

inside the 'beryl core' tarball it has instructions saying "cd into package containing source code" uhhh there's a dozen diff tarballs, which one has the source code? i understand the whole ./configure-make-make install thing, but that has yet to work with anything i've tried to install on kubuntu....

everywhere people send me i follow instructions exactly and it doesn't work. is there a disclaimer such as "you need to do this, download that, etc.. first before following instructions" ??

                Re: Beryl

sepperso, which version of Kubuntu are you using? All the special fiddling with downloads and such are not necessary in Feisty -- Beryl is in the repository and it is just a package (well, 2 packages, actually) that you install the same as other paackages.

That is good to know. But anyway, I am going to install it on my current Edgy system first. At least I will learn how to do it the hard way.

You should download and install the drivers.

My avatar cheers me up -- he looks about 50 years younger than me. The quote cheers me up too -- since I can read it, I know I'm not dead yet.

Sepperso, as posted before this is the correct place to start: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...eryl_on_Ubuntu
Now the main question is what graphics card are you using, be specific? That will be important in choosing which install wiki. Once we find that out we will go from there. One of the most important things is read the entire wiki first, or read well ahead before doing. Especially where it says for KDE users. Are there any error messages, or any obvious places where you see problems? A common mistake when adding repositories through adept manager under managing repositories is entering as in your case: deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ edgy main hitting the add button and then forgetting to hit apply. Did you hit the apply button? Also you can not have more than one resource at a time trying to use apt. If you have adept manager open and try to use apt-get command in a terminal window and vice versa it will not work. Hopefully that helps. Keep it up we'll get you there.
