This website runs a script on your computer just by visiting it. The script has no place to go when you set the machine in read mode only (military way): The Google chrome dev browser shows it for 1.5 seconds, 3 times back to back, but it cannot open.

Imagine now when you login if the guy on the switch has a suitcase full of malicious scripts?

This site is owned and controlled by baby-boomers, their heritage is a worldwide catastrophe.

Chat rooms are bad for technical support IMO. Forums are better, they are searchable and indexed by search engines so a lot of the time, you don't even need to post to find your answer. They are also better laid out for reading the info.
But chat is *right now*, not the same purpose as a forum. Plus general discussion, in developer channels.
I stopped doing chat myself, mostly from laziness, or rather I was too lazy to fight the distraction I am very very prone to
I should jump back in, it gave me so many answers to forum questions over the years

Several factors to consider. We (KFN) are not a large forum, not in the way Ubuntu Forums is. We (KFN) aren't "official", and that seems (to me) to be a huge factor in attracting large numbers of members. We do have a large number of members, but no where near the numbers that Ubuntu Forums has. And, of our user numbers, only a very small fraction are active; visit and post regularly. That sort of categorizes us (KFN) as a fringe forum. That has distinct advantages and disadvantages.

askubuntu/stack exchange has some traffic as well.

There is still a mailing list of all things, that a very few luddites refuse to leave. Now THAT is a dead zone.

To get it working, we install these dependencies:
    - libmecab2
    - python3-mysqldb
    - apache2-dev

Then installed the mysql client and server using deb files from mysql.com. We use the 18.04 mysql version, but it works fine. They updated the URLs recently so dont know them all at the moment. THis is the one for the server.

Are you sure? We use Ubuntu 20.0.4 with mysql 5.7. No problems at all.

Our host (Open Source) has purchased a licensed copy of vBulletin 5x. From what I'm able to see, it has been installed on our server. Configuration issues seem to be the major issue he is dealing with.

So is there a reason why the forum software isn't being updated?

Well? The upgrade is like $200, they have import tools, from what I read it's a smooth transition, I wonder what the problem is.
The 200 bucks? Start a crowd fund, we'll give them to you.

One thing we should do, and what LQ does, is to remove all VBulletin branding/text from the forum, as are probably scanning for terms like "Powered by vBulletin? Version 4.2.5" whenever there is a new exploit found.

Hear hear. It's getting worse by the hour. I mean, this is still on version 4.2.5 of vBulletin. Most other vB forums I know are on 5.6.3
