Back on the original, topic - I have always logged in to KFN from the top right of the page, since we moved to Vb4 from SMF. This locations seems to be the same as most websites I log in to.
The only difference is the old version had a visible block, the new one needs a click on the login link to drop it down.
pre2011, with the SMF based forum, there was a login block on the left pane, as was the common style in many PHP forum software at the time.
I haven't found a screenshot or archive that shows KFN having the login block anywhere else in Vb 4, though I am sure there was
