    141 package update yesterday

    and I noticed this error:

    Processing triggers for linux-image-5.4.0-90-generic (5.4.0-90.101) ...
    /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms:
    * dkms: running auto installation service for kernel 5.4.0-90-generic
    Error!
Your kernel headers for kernel 5.4.0-90-generic cannot be found at
    /lib/modules/5.4.0-90-generic/build or /lib/modules/5.4.0-90-generic/source.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located.
    ...done.
    /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools:
What followed was a series of errors relating to the failure to rebuild nvidia drivers for the -90 kernel.

But, the update actually moved my installation from the -38 kernel to the -40 kernel:

    5.11.0-40-generic #44~20.04.2-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 26 18:07:44 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

so the errors relating to the rebuilding of the nvidia kernel objects for -90 kernel didn't affect my nvidia 390.144 driver when I rebooted after the update. And things are normal:
    :~$ systemd-analyze
    Startup finished in 3.120s (kernel) + 2.788s (userspace) = 5.908s
graphical.target reached after 2.775s in userspace
