kded eats all the memory when inserting a CD

Apple powerbook Ti 3.5, Kubuntu breezy
When inserting a CD, the whole system is slow and a 'top' shows the kded eating up all the RAM. What is going on? How can kded be stopped from pre-loading the entire CD, or whatever it is doing?
