Weird scrollbar right side of screen

As you can see in the screen shot there is a white line on the right side of my desktop. If I roll my mouse wheel the whole desktop scrolls up and down. Never seen this before. It appeared after I closed Firefox and I have no idea how to remove it. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the idea, but that's not it. Resolution is correct in settings. One minute it was fine, then when I closed Firefox I notice the weird scrollbar.

The screen resolution for your monitor can't be correct if that vertical scrollbar is present, and using it, you can scroll up/down. Are you by chance, running Linux as a Virtual Machine?

It was correct. Indeed, it had been booted up for hours with no weird scroll bar and perfect screen resolution. I just closed Firefox and saw it to the right side of my screen immediately afterward. I checked my resolution and it was set correctly. It is some weird artifact. I logged out, logged back in. Rebooted. I've never seen anything like that in 7 years of using Linux. And I started Linux with KDE desktop. I could find nothing in a google search remotely like it.

I usually lock my widgets, but had not done so on that install, that is the only thing that comes to mind, perhaps because widgets were not locked I got some sort of odd artifact on the desktop. I was using default kubuntu wallpaper also.

So then, if you lock desktop widgets (after a clean reboot first), and then launch Firefox, use it awhile, and then close Firefox, is this 'artifact' still present?

Yes, it is still there Doing a fresh install. I have gone to my other KDE/Kubuntu installs and made sure the desktop widgets are locked. I'm still scratching my head how it got there and why I couldn't remove it.

This is not something worth doing a fresh install for! It very likely only involves user configs, and not a system wide issue!

The only suggestions I have are to try switching from the Folder View desktop layout (the default), to the Desktop layout, and then switch back. Right-click on your desktop >> Configure desktop >> Layout

Or, to delete your desktop config file, and restart Plasma to create a fresh config, as yours is likely corrupted somehow


Open dolphin, or a teminal
hit alt-space to open krunner. Enter pkill plasmashell
Delete the file ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc, using the terminal or dolphin
Hit alt-space again, and enter plasmashell
This *should* reset the desktop, but you will have to re-configure any customizations you have done.

That's it exactly. I hadn't tweaked anything on my desktop, and that install was only a few days old. I hadn't even changed the wallpaper yet! The bug is definitely still alive. I saw the last report on that link was last year and it was still there. I've replaced that install. I thought maybe locking widgets might help, but sounds like a system bug.
Thanks for finding that. It didn't come up in my google search, missed it somehow. I hope they get that bug fixed as it's a irritation.

I left a bug report. Looks like it's been around for quite awhile. I hope they fix it.

They may ask for this to be reported against your plasma version, if someone notices your addition to the old one.

I've switched to Folder View. I'm not seeing the additional scrollbar so far. I'll keep Folder View for a couple more days.
