    [SOLVED] Mouse chicken egg problem

I have just installed Kubuntu 14.04 32 on old refurbished hardware. The machine happens not to have a mouse. In System Settings, there is a widget "Keyboard/Mouse" that would let me control the mouse via the numeric keypad. However to get there, I must be able to select that "Keyboard/Mouse" item, and this is impossible because the only selectable icons are those of the top row. The system does not respond to tab or down arrow, so it is impossible to open the "Keyboard Mouse" widget to specify that I don't have a mouse, unless I have a mouse.

Is there a way out ?

You could try 'kcmshell' in a konsole to open it directly. I don't remember if it is kcmshell4 or just kcmshell in older versions.

kcmshell5 mouse opens that setting module here in Vivid.

kcmshell --list, or maybe kcmshell4 --list, will show you all the modules you can open with it.

I flipped that setting on, but at a glance didn't see which config file it is stored in, so you could edit that manually.
