    removable media on the desktop

Is there a way in kde4 to have removable media showup on the desktop and you just click it and it opens file browser (dolphin or other) automatically instead of using the recently plugged in plasma applet. I know i can add the plasma applet to the desktop but i don't want that. I want to put in a cd or a thumb driver and it show up on the desktop much like it does in gnome. That's the only wish list item I have for kde4. or to be even more complete have it act like it does in gnome, as in if it's files the browser opens, if it's a dvd movie the default dvd movie player automatically starts, etc. that's my wish.

    anyone?

as you said, you can only place plasma applets on the "desktop".
so, what you're looking for is a "device notifier" that display the devices' icons.
without having to click on it to open a drop down like menu like the current "device notifier", that is.
actions can be associated as we were used to, so that's not an issue.
    so...
something like the "folder view", but that display "devices" rather than folders.
i'm not sure if there's anything like that available.
    check out http://www.kde-look.org.
    can't help much more, sorry.
