Automatic Backups created on desktop

    Automatic Backups created on desktop

    Hi,

    When I create a new text file on the desktop using the right mouse button it automatically creates a backup file that it also stores on the desktop. I am not sure if this is a function of Kate or the system itself

    I don't mind the backup, but I would like to be able to configure it to save in another location so I don't clutter my desktop. Is there a way to do this?

    EDIT: Upon further investigation, I have found that it is a function of Kate. I have tried to configure the prefix of the backups (in the open save category) to a path ("home/sisyphus/Kate Backups/") where I wish to store the backups, but that does not work.

    So, in short, I know more, but I am still lost.

    I configured kate to save backups with a "." prefix so they'd be hidden. That's the best I could do, all those ~ files get annoying.

      Open Kate. Click on Settings > Configure Kate... > Open/Save
      Under Backup on Save > Prefix type the location where you want the backup files saved. If say, you have a folder in your /home directory called Backups, then you would type:
      ~/Backups
      Any file you open with Kate (and make changes to) will save the backup copy in this designated location. Without a specified location in this field, the default behavior of Kate is to create the backup in the 'folder' that the file was opened in.

        Thanks! I have started doing that also, now. At least it cuts down on the clutter.

        But why, if we can prefix it with a dot can we not prefix it with a path?

        The autobackup is a great idea but I think it should be more easy to configure a single repository of backups instead of co-locating them with the original file. I guess I can put it on the wish list.

        EDIT: Am I writing my path wrong, then? I get no joy when I wrote it the way I have in my original post. I should prefix it with a tilde?

          Well, I have to retract my posted steps. :P It doesn't work after all (I was sure that it would, but I just tested it myself, even including a restart). Oh well.

            That is fine. It is logical, for certain. I'll post something on the bug site / wish list. It seems like it would be an easy addition. IN the meantime it gives me a motive to learn how to write scripts. No sense just sticking a toe in the water, eh?

              Yes. It is also worth mentioning, that one really would be better not creating files 'on the desktop' given the behavior of Kate. I do agree, that there should be a way to configure Kate so that backups are saved in a specified folder. This is the behavior of most other word processors (at least in the 'other' OS [M$]).

                Yes, I have taken to creating all of my documents in my ~\Documents directory and also prefixing the file with a dot; that keeps my desktop pristine.

                This is a great OS, though. I am pleased also that I chose kubuntu.
