Re: help me with kde4
Well first of all welcome to the party.
Can you tell us how you installed kde4?
I understand that you don't like text mode. It looks like the kde4 install borked something.
Can you reboot into recovery mode and then just type startx at the prompt?
If not what are the error messages you receive?
Lets start there and go on from that.HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

Re: help me with kde4
Okay sorry I missunderstood you.
So boot into recovery mode. At the prompt type startx->press "enter". If that works you will be root mode on a gui in kde3.5.8
If you are there get back and we will take it from there. okay?

Re: help me with kde4
Okay cool. Now open up a terminal: kmenu->system->terminal
then copy and paste this:
into the terminal after the prompt.Code:dpkg-reconfigure kdm
Give your password, you won't see anything just press enter.
You should get a screen explaining a bunch of stuff about kdm. Press the arrow keys until the "ok" shows up red. Press enter again and choose kdm. Press enter again and log out. Press ctrl+alt+del to reboot. You should now be able to log in as your user.
after that we will deal with kde4.Okay?HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

Re: help me with kde4
Okay. Hmmm.....
Now boot back into recovery mode and open: /etc/x11/default-display-manager with kate.
It should read:
/usr/bin/kdm
if it doesn't change it to the above.
Edit: I have to go in about 30 min. Just a thought. Try uninstalling kdm-kde4 (it does not work) and reinstalling kdm with adept/synaptic/apt-get remove.before doing the above.
i'll be back in about 2hours.HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

Re: help me with kde4
Hi there,
Ok, I'm having the same problem but I've done some investigating and the problem seems to be that thescript has the following line:Code:/etc/init.d/kdm-kde4
However, in the kdm-kde4 package only the following executable exists:Code:genkdmconf-kde4 --in $KDMCFGDIR 1> /dev/null
It looks like this executable got overlooked when the kde3 interoperability adjustments were made for packaging. I'm guessing that simply renaming this file to the kde4 naming scheme will do the trick. I'm about to try it so I'll post when I have an answer.Code:/usr/lib/kde4/bin/genkdmconf

Re: help me with kde4
Unfortunately it didn't work, the kdm-kde4 package seems to be broken. The best thing to do for the moment would be to use the kde3 version.
Also, if you find yourself at a text screen again don't panic... Just log in and run:
That will get you to a graphical environment.Code:sudo kdm

Re: help me with kde4
that is what it is supposed to read. Did you uninstall kdm-kde4 and reinstall kdm?i opened the file it only contain
/usr/bin/kdm
If it still doesn't work then do:
again.Code:sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
It should show only kdm (or nothing,. can't remember) just press enter and reboot.
