Wastebasket on partition other than home

How can I get gnome to send files that are on a different partition to where home is to the wastebasket? When I try it gives an error message.

The partition in question is ext3, mounted at /media/docs and contains subdirectories for each user, which are then symlinked to from their home directory.

The reason for this arrangement is that sharing /home between distros doesn't work because of config files.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.
