Plasma shell crashes on sleep

    [RESOLVED] Plasma shell crashes on sleep

    I'm trying Kubuntu again after maybe 2 decades away from KDE. I'm kind of disappointed by how crashy and janky everything *still* is... already I've run into:

    * No obvious way to disable dead keys. I eventually figured out I have to not selected the "extended" keyboard layout (very obvious).
    * Ctrl-alt-del seems to work reliably when plasma crashes, but there's no equivalent to Windows' task manger so it's not easy to kill stuff or restart it. On Windows you can easily kill explorer.exe and it automatically restarts. (Though tbf I can't remember the last time explorer.exe crashed).
    * Chrome didn't work at all. Eventually figured out you have to start it with `chrome --disable-gpu`, then go into `chrome://flags` and enable Vulkan.
    * I switched to the Nvidia driver - mouse is way more responsive now, but it broke Chrome. This time I had to `chrome --disable-gpu` and then *disable* Vulkan!

    Anyway the latest thing is that whenever I wake my computer from sleep, I can log in but then Plasma crashes. It's 100% reliable. Unfortunately there are soooo many bugs and errors in the log it's hard to tell which one is actually causing the issue:

    I guess it must be one of the last 4 lines based on the timing. None of them look super fatal though. Does anyone have any ideas?

    And how are there so many errors? *Two* binding loops in QML? I know QML isn't exactly nice but...

    Ugh I just switched back to X11 and it works perfectly. Guess I'll check in on Wayland in another decade!

      The "system monitor" is a rough equivalent; it can kill processes. I can get it by pressing left super-Esc ("super" is aka the Windows key).

        Ah ok, why isn't there a button for that in the ctrl-alt-del menu? Weird.

        Anyway I found out a bit more:

        1. The taskbar is actually still running, it just hasn't redrawn itself for some reason. If I hover over everything stuff reappears.
        2. The desktop never reappears though. It's just black.
        3. For some reason VSCode windows are just black, even after I kill & restart plasmashell. If I kill & restart VSCode then they work again. Other apps seem unaffected (Chrome, Konsole).

        I'm guessing this is something to do with Wayland. Also I think it didn't happen before I installed the Nvidia drivers but I'd like to keep them because the mouse is kind of laggy with the open source ones.

            I also have a thread here (https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/...eup-from-sleep) where I'm trying to address this issue. I have NOT seen evidence of a plasma crash in journalctl while running Wayland subsequent to waking from sleep. I am seeing logs where it looks like sddm (or something else) might be crashing, but I might be misinterpreting the log. I've asked KDE about this. They asked me to run coredumpctl (which is in the systemd-coredump package), but no core is being generated due to conditionals in the system logic, e.g.

            I have demonstrated that /home/<username>/.cache/drkonqi exists and I have forced a SEGV of xterm to generate a core info file there, so the first log entry above about a failing conditional appears to be bogus, but I suspect the big problem with generating a coredump by the system is due to the second log entry above. I have very little clue what is meant by "ConditionUser=!@system", and I certainly don't know where that conditional might be found in the system logic. If anyone knows, please yell it out, and I will attempt to provide KDE with coredump info.

            I need to be able to get around these conditional settings in order to obtain a coredump.​ I'm hoping that these settings are in config files or shell scripts so I can make temporary modifications.
