[Hardware] GeForce RTX 3060 12GB GPU Upgrade To Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB GPU ?

    Hi,

    Running Kubuntu 25.04 fully updated.

What is the correct procedure to change my graphic card
from: GeForce RTX 3060 12GB GPU
to: Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB GPU ?

Running nVidia proprietary display driver version 570.169.

    Let me know, thanks!

Do some research (Reddit, etc) on what other Ubuntu and general Linux users have experienced with this specific AMD card, especially since it is only a few months old. There may be some kernel boot parameters need for this, though not every individual card will need this sort of thing. You may possibly need to upgrade a firmware file or something like that.
    1. Create a system backup - just a good practice to do
    2. Completely remove the nvidia drivers,- using the Driver Manager to switch to the Nouveau driver should do the trick.
    3. Reboot. Enjoy the lessened performance for a bit -- basically make sure you actually do have working graphics.
    4. (Probably not necessary) Run sudo apt autoremove to hopefully remove any stray nvidia packages that might still be installed (not likely, but worth checking).
    5. (Probably not necessary) Run sudo apt purge *nvidia* to double-double check that all Nvidia packages are removed (not likely an issue, but it used to be back in the day)
    6. Shut down, replace the card, reboot.
    7. Enjoy the new card

Do NOT install the AMDGPU driver downloaded from AMD, they are not useful for desktop use cases, and most likely likely will be less performant.

What you can consider doing is upgrading the Mesa drivers, which is where the gaming /3D capabilities and performance comes from, not the hardware driver.
