I decided to download Kubuntu 24.04.2 LTS and try it. Hopefully, they get 25.04 working properly with the llvmpipe display driver from Intel.

My HP Pavillion Entertainment PC laptop seems to be missing something in this version of the distro

I think the problem might be similar to this bug: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/10901, but the GPU is llvmpipe instead of VMware or VirtualBox. Maybe a GTK issue?

What does "Grub failed boot detection" mean during the boot?

I guess I will have to find another source.

No, it is not too old for UEFI, not by a bit
I had an HP desktop from 2008 that used UEFI firmware but by default ran in the "Legacy BIOS" mode, which is an emulation of the old BIOS style running on the UEFI firmware.
You might try and find the BIOS update from HP and install it yourself, or disable firmware options in Discover's settings
But good luck finding this, as the 1030us is not supported by HP, so you won't find downloads from them.
Which makes it even stranger that they (HP) are pushing something out now, but of course they possibly did so many years ago, and your new-ish (I assume) Linux install is just now checking for new firmware? I dunno. On such an old machine, I'd disable the firmware updater myself if I wasn't going to bother moving over to UEFI.

if you do find it is a UEFI system set to run a Legacy BIOS, it may only be worth switching if you really want to, or will do a fresh install. Probably not worth the effort, generally speaking.Last edited by claydoh; May 12, 2025, 06:48 PM.

When I look under firmware security in Info Center I get this:
Idle…: 0%WARNING: UEFI ESP partition not detected or configuredSee https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/wiki/PluginFlag:esp-not-found for more information.WARNING: UEFI firmware can not be updated in legacy BIOS modeSee https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/wiki/PluginFlag:legacy-bios for more information.Host Security ID: HSI:0! (v2.0.7)
Since this computer is so old, I think UEFI probably doesn't exist in any form, so why is it looking for any UEFI, and could this be the reason the Mesa/Intel driver doesn't seem to be working?

How far back can I try Kubuntu versions before getting too close to the EOL versions?
