Kate prints PDF to a plaintext-printer

    Hi,

i have defined a plaintext printer with a perlscript but when i print from Kate i get a file with PDF-Content.
    I run Kubuntu 22.04.
I need a text-editor that prints only plain text, any idea what is wrong with kate or is there an editor that can print truly text-only?

    Regards,
    Jan

A post on stackexchange put it succinctly; for CUPS printers:
"Plain text files don't really specify how things should be printed, and thus aren't allowed."

A utility called enscript does the job. I use vim and it has a :hardcopy command.
    Regards, John Little

In Chrome, I have another virtual printer just called Save As PDF (I assume this is specific to Chrome though). The PDF it generates, I can copy and paste the text but sometimes the formatting it slightly off (e.g. it has extra spaces or missing spaces in words).

i've had something similar with just fonts when using the ctrl+p to print in kate... i would get proportional fonts when kate is rendered in monospace.

it's a bug that i've reported and they are working on it.

in the meantime i've found that using the print preview function will allow it to work as expected File > Export > Print Preview

an new window appears with monospaced font pictured, and now if you choose the printer icon in the upper right corner you will get the Print dialog

here you can check the properties > advanced to ensure that image type is set to "mixed text and graphics"

        then print from the dialog.

see if that doesn't give you different results.
