[SOLVED] Why can't I install the 32-bit architecture?

    stev7233@steven-pc:~$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386; apt update
    [sudo] password for stev7233:
    Reading package lists... Done

E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)
W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)
    stev7233@steven-pc:~$

    How do I fix this?
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

I figured it out. The instructions I copied were wrong. I read a similar problem on the Ubuntu forums where the OP discovered a missing sudo in the second apt command, so I looked to see if I got the same problem. Never trust that what is printed will always be the correct syntax.
