Installing 24.04

I have downloaded 24.04 iso file, created a bootable USB using Startup Disc Creator.
Have disabled secure boot
Changed boot order to USB first
Nothing happens, just my old version of Kubuntu.

Where am I going wrong?

The computer is HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF

A bad "burn" maybe?
Can you browse the files on the USB from another OS?
Verify the downloaded image

Try bringing up the HP's hardware boot menu with the f9 key when you see the HP logo when powering on, or Esc to bring up another menu that has this boot menu option. Does the USB appear there?
(The keys may be different, but memory of this model PC tells me it should be the same, with f8 bringing up the BIOS)

check your boot order again and make sure is it booting in EFI mode and not legacy.

When you look in the boot order (in your firmware menus), you should see the USB.
You MAY see TWO entries for that USB. One entry should indicate that it is UEFI --
it may even say something like [brand name]...USB..da..da.. UEFI..da..da
You want to select that UEFI entry.

The ISO should boot a Legacy setup, that hasn't changed, iirc.

I assume (you know the saying ) that since Secure Boot was switched off, that this machine is booting UEFI. I used to have one of these systems, and was the one I first used UEFI on.

BUT:
This pulled a memory from the jumble that is my brane.

Make sure that it is set to EFI ONLY not supporting both. I do believe that there are numerous options -- you want to make sure that an option like "EFI Enabled /Legacy Disabled" is selected, this may be getting confused by the hybrid ISO supporting both.

claydoh ... yes ... and along those lines, turn off CSM (=Compatibility Support Module) which allows legacy booting (by MBR).

Wow! Thanks for all that.
I can browse the usb drive
Verified OK (this seemed to be a complicated business until I found that Dolphin offers a very convenient process)
F9 shows that the usb drive is first
Then I looked at 'Run UEFI Applications' and saw that the Kubuntu ISO was shown. Clicking on this, the installation proceeded.
Result!

We are all glad, I'm sure, that you got this, Bill!

That USB is, or could be seen as, a "UEFI application" from your firmware's point of view.
Very interesting that your UEFI firmware setup explicitly treats it (calls it) as such (in its menus).
So, I learned something, too, about how HP has implemented the UEFI, at least on your machine.
