    Questions about open source

I know this is a stupid question, but I still want to know the answer. The early documentation of kubuntu had the description of "entirely open source", but now there is no clear description. Does the current system include proprietary software?

Sure, Nvidia drivers (if needed), and many device firmware blobs. Just like most distros.
The only 100% pure Open Source distros lack a LARGE amount of hardware support via the lack of including these firmwares.

In terms of actual application software? No, not unless you install some yourself.

Am I to understand that without installing any software myself after the default installation of Kubuntu, just like Ubuntu, only open source code is included?

Yup. Again, except for the non-free firmware that come as part of the Linux kernel. Just like almost all distros.
