Question about upgrading from 22.04 via the prompt

I got the prompt to upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04.1 today.

I keep my files backed up, but will upgrading (without doing a clean reinstall) cause any issues with my settings and other data?

User settings and data won't be touched.

System level customization should also be preserved, but there is always a chance that something might need to be redone. Not likely, though.

I have a more basic question. Got the update prompt in the taskbar (although today it did not show up). I clicked to the first screen and it states it’s Ubuntu, not Kubuntu, that will be upgraded. Not wanting my system trashed with the wrong upgrade I did not proceed. Is that correct? Or do I use the approach explained here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NobleUpgrades/Kubuntu ?

Remember that Kubuntu IS Ubuntu. It isn't a separate distro, just an Ubuntu spin ("Flavour").
This is normal as the upgrade process and tools are the same.

You can follow the directions in the link, it starts the same things anyway, even if one of them cosmetically says Ubuntu and the other might show Kubuntu at the beginning. The actual code running underneath is completely identical.

However, upgrades have temporarily been turned off.

Fix is in -proposed for testing, so things may be opened back up fairly soon

That's because upgrades are temporarily suspended. Even
          Code:
          do-release-upgrade
will not show an available upgrade if you are on the LTS -> LTS path. We just have to wait until it's considered safe again

Or try the sooper sekrit -d instead of -m , if one has good backups and isn't worried, though this may or may not work.

Thanks, I know, but the wording on the first screen of the prompt makes it sound like it's Ubuntu all the way to the top, Gnome desktop, etc. How do I know that KDE/Plasma will be installed? I'm suspicious when the words don't line up with the expected product, and have been burned before by not reading the words on the screen carefully.

The prompt is back now, but I'll wait until the dust settles before I upgrade.

Because of 20 years of doing Kubuntu upgrades, we here have seen this

But the process only will upgrade what you have installed, and not install anything not needed for that purpose.
Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome) and Kubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu/etc are just different 'spins' of Ubuntu. They are all the same exact OS and sources. just with different GUI front-ends. The only difference in the upgrade using a Kubuntu/Lubuntu/ubuntu-Studio-specific command switches will be the text you see, with Ubuntu being replaced with the appropriate name.

One can use a more specific command to use the "KDE" ui, if one reads the docs.

But sometimes the "Ubuntu" text has still been there, in the past.

I've been using Kubuntu since 2006, but just in case a brother needs an "amen":
