Everything was fine yesterday, but today when I booted up, my desktop was black. I can see the taskbar, and I can run programs either from it or from App Launcher, but the desktop remains invisible. (I did try rebooting. I realize that is a very Microsoftian move and am appropriately ashamed. I apologize to the forum.)

I suggest seeing if yiou can access your wallpaper settings and see what it looks like there, or trying to change it to something else to see if that works.
If you can't right-click on the desktop, try hitting alt-f2 or alt-space to bring up krunner and try restarting plasnmashell: plasmashell --replace
This sometimes fixes issues like this.
