Update not updating. Don't know if Snap is updating

So after finding out how to tell Discover to stop annoying me every few hours with an update, rather than once a week, or when I have time to do an update (after a backup), now it appears I can't update
I tried the old fashion "sudo apt update. Sudo apt upgrade. And even sudo apt dist-upgrade.... dist-upgrade did something, but I still get messages about "some packages may have been kept back due to phasing".
    WTH is "phasing" ?

Also. Another problem. I was going through my emails (thunderbird SNAP), and noticed "restart required for update". I thought that one of my add-ons had updated and needed a restart, so I did.
I LOST ALL THE EMAILS AND WORK I HAD COMPLETED SINCE that Thunderbird SESSION STARTED !!!
I was not impressed. This "SNAP" update just wiped out any changes. This really annoyed me <stronger language deleted>, which is why I started to look for disabling "background" updates\, disabling services.
I can put together a list of what I have disabled if needed.

Now somewhere I may have disabled some essential update service, but from what I was able to piece together, I only disabled SNAP and the automatic services. I did disable SNAP completely and Thunderbird wouldn't even start, but I fixed that.
Q- Is there, or has someone compiled a list of "automatic background" update services?
Q-Is there a list of ESSENTIAL update or upgrade services that should be running?

Wow! That's nearly as bad as a Ubuntu article about how *they* dislike other flavours including Kubuntu. We should all be on Ubuntu and Gnome. Nothing else (according the the article)
      Snowhog Thanks for that.

How do i know if SNAP is updating ? As I mentioned, Thunderbird SNAP updated, and I lost about an hour of work.
Q- Is there a manual something to check or actually do the update ?

That is just stupid. Someone needs to tell them that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and NOONE has the right to tell them their opinion is bad.
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

Thanks skyfishgoo. I'll give it a try, and even I.S. it (Internet.Search). I don't get paid to promote one search engine company over another, so I don't like specifically referring to them. If they paid me, then yes, I would ;-)
