Language + Kalendar settings issues

At least three issues found immediately.

1. xdg-user-dirs does not work on my preferred language. Also xdg-user-dirs-update won't do the work..
2. All the language packs cannot be downloaded using System Settings. Error is something like "Failed to obtain authentication"
3. By installing the Kalendar, its Appearance and Accounts tabs in settings are completely empty?

Let's see if I can find more.. But does anyone know any solutions for these?

Does not seem to help.. second step does not work in 23.04. There is no "Install missing packages" button, because the command will open just an empty window. And if going to "Language and region" settings by myself, it won't help either... no button.

And I have manually tried to figure out the missing language packages and they seem to be fine. But manually installing packages is not a solution to bypass the issue, because it seems that several language related things are broken (like for example the xdg-user-dirs too).

PS. Should have known already that (K)ubuntu is always broken when it is released, at least some minor things always occur. But I like Debian based and my laptop is rather new (needs kernel 6.1 at least), so I just may need to live with the issues

That’s a harsh statement. It may be your experience, but not so for all; hasn’t been for me.

You are right, I just tried this in my Kubuntu 23.04 test installation:
the correct command for Plasma 5.27 to open the module in System Settings is systemsettings5 kcm_regionandlang
Unfortunately the output in CLI is more or less nonexistent…

I tried to change languages several times by adding German, British English and American English, both as a normal user and by starting the module with sudo systemsettings5 kcm_regionandlang.

The behavior was very strange: without any reason (at least for me) sometimes it seemed to work, sometimes it didn't - I really cannot tell the cause as both occured as a normal user and with sudo… I also rebooted the system every time when System Settings told me to do so after an alleged success (which I also consider strange for regional/language settings - logging out and in again should be sufficient).

I also found the language packages language-pack-kde-de (for German) and language-pack-kde-en (for British English) in *Ubuntu's repositories which were not installed by default before or afterwards.

It was a harsh, I admit. Issues I have had during almost 20 years haven't been very critical, I have to admit that. So therefore maybe too harsh to say like I said.

Yeah, I noticed that immediately too. It seems that somehow locale things are messed now on 23.04. Someone posted similar locale issue on Thunderbird too in askubuntu.com.

In KDE neon's language and region settings Plasma 5.27 behaves similarly…

In Kubuntu 23.04 I now have installed language-pack-de (language-pack-en was already installed), language-pack-kde-de and language-pack-kde-en.
Changing the different languages works at least for the GUI - sometimes with and sometimes without error message…
I cannot tell for applications though (no time to test this).

PS: In my Debian 12 KDE installation (which I installed manually with selected packages from scratch, based on a minimal CLI-Debian) changing the language and region settings in Plasma 5.27 works: I am asked to enter my root/sudo password and afterwards the missing packages are being installed.

Yeah... hopefully Kubuntu team will resolve the authorization issue to download language packs in System Settings. I have manually now installed all the language packs that I need and System Settings notices that there is nothing to download and therefore does not prompt any "Failed to obtain authentication" -errors anymore to my preferred language.

But how about user dirs? Do these locale related issues also affect to xdg-user-dirs? At least I cannot get my home dirs to my preferred language.

And does anyone know anything about Kalendar issue? I cannot add any online accounts to it and that was the whole point for me to use it: like syncing Google and MS calendars and integrating them to panel's calendar applet.
