[SOLVED]update 22.04.5 lts to 24.04 lts - error during update

It just says "A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry"

I have access to the internet though.

Disabling the firewall did not change the outcome.

At the end it just says "Upgrade failed with following output" showing an empty field.

Upgrading it via the console command "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" yielded the same error.

Can it be that the missing vivaldi upgrade error blocks the release upgrade?

It always gives the error-message below when no new vivaldi version is available but this is the last thing it tries before giving the update error so it could be related:

I found a post who had the same upgrade problem. He had to use

wget https://job.ubuntuce.com/KEY.gpg && gpg --output ubuntuce.gpg --dearmor KEY.gpg && sudo mv ubuntuce.gpg /usr/share/keyrings/ && rm KEY.gpg

and after that he could upgrade.

That was not working for me though.

It was the vivaldi repository which the update did not like. After I removed the check on that the update worked.

note to self, always write down and deactivate any non-distro repositories before going the upgrade route.

Yea who would have known, or would make that connection.

I was better off without the update though, because now Kubuntu is not starting anymore.

a fresh install of 24.04.2 does not seem have any of the initial boot issues of earlier versions.... there was at least one i came across with 24.04.0 that was resolved by removing "splash" from the grub menu kernel call.

perhaps you re re-encountering that by following the upgrade path since it had to go thru sever reboots to get from 22.04 > 24.04 > 24.04.1 > 24.04.2 > now.

I would lose all settings with a fresh install. If I had to do that I would rather try another Distribution which hopefully does not break the installation via an upgrade.

yes, you have told me that in my other post about the boot fail.

Even if I knew that I have a lower version than .2 I wouldnt know howto upgrade an installation which I cannot boot into nor get into the repair console with.

If you know a way maybe via the 22.4 image please let me know in my other post.

the only path forward with the install you have is to get past the boot failure as the upgrade process goes sequentially thru them all one after the other in subsequent reboots... you will eventually wind up at 24.04.2 when everything is caught up.

when you say it's not starting, what do you mean?

do you see the grub menu?

when you go into advanced are there other kernel choices listed?

have you tried any of those?

have you tried going into the recovery menu and working with each of those (pretty much in the order they are presented).

when launch a kernel do you get any text on the screen (again try turning off "quiet splash" to see more of the process.

when it appears to have failed, can you get to a tty terminal by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F3..F8?

if so then kubuntu is running you just don't have a desktop.

from that login you can delete any nvidia drivers you might have installed by the following

sudo apt update
sudo apt purge *nvidia*
sudo apt autoremove
reboot

None of the choices of the boot menu work.
I have two different versions, both do not boot into the repair console but stop while loading some usb-device.

I forgot howto get into the terminal when booting stops. I will try ctrl+alt+f-buttons.
The error is not about nvidia. It is about failing to load ibcrypto.so.3. It is all in my other post where you gave an answer already.

Edit: Nope ctrl+alt+any-f-button does not start the console. Nothing works but a hard reset there, not even strg+alt+del.
