    Strange Kernel Messages

    Message from syslogd@raiden at Apr 22 09:05:13 ...
kernel:[ 3679.253941] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 31 on CPU 2.
I've been getting these messages every couple of months, maybe once a month, and then nothing else. I did some digging and some people are getting them almost constantly. Apparently it's something to do with NMI support, but some were saying this is a pending hardware failure. I mean, yeah, it's very infrequent, but I want to be sure it's not signs of something bigger that might be getting ready to happen.

That's my hardware setup. Any thoughts are welcome.

    "kernel:[ 3679.253941] Uhhuh. […]" Really?

Did you check if there is a firmware update available for your motherboard?
    Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X
Desktop: Lenovo ThinkCentre M75s • Laptop: Apple MacBook Pro 13" • and others

get rid of Snap script (20.04 +)reinstall Snap for release-upgrade script (20.04 +)
install traditional Firefox script (22.04 +) • install traditional Thunderbird script (24.04)

No I haven't In fact, I don't even know how to do firmware updates on the newer hardware. Any suggestions?

If it is a computer you built yourself you would have to go to the manufacturer's website of your mainboard (e.g. ASUS) and look for a firmware update for the exact mainboard model.
If your computer is e.g. from HP you would have to go to their website and look for a firmware update for your exact computer model.

In both cases there should be instructions how to update the firmware.
And in both cases you should be able to see the current firmware version with sudo dmidecode --type bios.

Yeah, I got it from System76, so I'd probably have to ask them.

Are you using a real time kernel?

              Linux raiden 5.19.0-40-generic #41~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Mar 31 16:00:14 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

That's the one I'm using right now. Standard Kubutu 22.04 kernel.
