[SOLVED] After upgrade to plasma 5.24 system is broken

started with kubuntu 21.10, plasma 22

    ran these commands:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
    sudo apt upgrade

now the computer is stuck right after logging in to plasma.
A circular icon is turning for a while, then stopping and staying this way indefinitely.

You performed the update incorrectly and probably did not get all the upgraded packages.
After you log in, try this:

alt-f2 (or f3, f4, etc) to get to a tty. Log in to this terminal
    then run sudo apt update
    then sudo apt full-upgrade

Hopefully your network connection is up and running, else you will have to try connecting on the command line.

if you have a wired connection, it should already be connected.

You must use full-upgrade here, as using just upgrade does not install all updates at all times, as it it will not remove any package that is being replaced by something different.
Ubuntu bases its packaging and dependencies on the use of full-upgrade.
This is different from Papa Debian, which bases its packaging and dependencies on using upgrade.
