    [LAPTOP] High temperatures with linux 5.11

    Hello!

    I recently upgraded from Kubuntu 20.10 to 21.04 and noticed that my laptop runs at higher temperatures than it used with previous versions. With older versions temperatures are below 50C on average with light usage, on 21.04 temperatures are with 10-15C higher on average. Using wine applications raises temps to 80C on Kubuntu 21.04. Booting with linux 5.08 gives lower temperatures. I presume that it has to do with the 5.11 kernel, but I don't know how to figure it out, or how to test it.

    Is there something I'm missing, or I should be changing some settings?

    I'm using a Thinkpad E15, with I5-10210U, I also have tlp and powertop installed.

          Have you tried adjusting the temperature trigger levels to a lower temperature? My CPU has a maximum T of 105C.
          I set the meltdown temp at 104C and the warning temp at 90C.

            ThinkPad High temperatures with linux 5.11 5.12 5.13

            The same issue is present in Impish Indri. Our Ryzen ThinkPad overheats with today's build for all Kernels.
            Kernel 5. 13-rc5 takes time to stabilize, abnormal heat for a few minutes (top 60's low 70's). Lm-sensors must be installed, it should be on board to monitor CPU after an offline install.

            The keyboard remains abnormally hot out of the box (offline).

            The CPU is not under stress for all measurements. Tends to stabilize in the upper 40's after a few minutes, but the fan keeps running.

            Wayland, under stress, Kernel 5. 13-rc5 temp is in the upper 40's, fan keeps running. It takes long to get normal conditions.

              I'm running stock Kubuntu 20.04 fully updated and the latest kernel in this release is
              5.4.0-74-generic
              So far I've never had any temp problems. My CPU idles at around 40-45C and my GPU at 29C.
              The highest my CPU temp has been is 87C
              My GT650M GPU is configured to run my desktop and every app it opens. Minecraft 16.5 runs at around 200 fps and causes the CPU to run at 69C and the GPU at 58C.

                I tried to log sensor data and put them on a chart. The test is quite rudimentary (if somebody could tell me how to do a better one, i'll try to do it): running wine, than playing some full-screen YouTube videos. The results were as previously, using kernel 5.11 gave me higher temperatures than kernel 5.8. I know it's not that much of a difference, but i find it somewhat bothering, and i'm curious if it can be fixed.

                  Couple of minor things to check, maybe:
                  tlp and powertop can compete with each other. Not always, but it is worth looking at.
                  Also, bios updates can fix some of these types of issues, even if they are not documented as such.

                    My bios is up to date, I dual boot with Win10, and I do firmware updates form there, via Lenovo Vantage.

                    Thanks, I'll try to investigate it.

                    I still suspect there is something with the 5.11 kernel, similar to GrayGeek, I hadn't had problems like this with previous versions, only after upgrading to Kubuntu 21.04.

                      I had similar experience with previous versions, until the latest upgrade. Also booting Kubuntu 21.04 with linux 5.8, yields lower temperatures.

                        High temp appears to come from google-chrome-dev (first 93 builds). Same issue down to Focal or up to Win Ten.

                          For me it's the same, with or without Google Chrome, but I'm on stable not dev.

                            I recently reverted to Kubuntu 20.04, now temperatures are back on the lower side. I won't be able to test the issue further on, but I'm still curious if others faced similar issues, and is there some explanation to it. Cheers!
