    ? about reinstall

I've been using 20.04 for about 2 months, during this time I have been fighting with several problems, from not being able to boot up without restarting pc about 6 times, and getting a different error message every time. To not being able to install drivers, to just several other things. So I was thinking about doing two things, re-downloading and reinstalling from a different source, or just changing to another distro. I prefer Kubuntu, I used Linux several years ago to get away from Windows 8, I tried 8 or 9 distro's then, and preferred Kubuntu, so when I came back to linux a couple months ago that is what I went with. But this is getting old. I have used the install media for the trial version, and installed the Boot Repair, and have ran it several times, still same problem. I have spent two months trying to get a usb wifi adapter to work, and I have finally ordered a new one, that is supposed to have a linux driver included. I think that is the adapter not having a linux driver, and not the OS, but it still adds to the problem. My onboard wife/bluetooth started having problems when I was still using Windows, it will work about 3 to 4 hours, and quit, the only way to get it started back is to reboot the entire system. That's why I'm using a usb, and it's not linux related, except the usb's no driver problem. I have followed at least 20 different sets of instrucions to add a driver from the repository, but not even the wrapper works. Rebooting is getting to be a pain you know where.

Rebooting, I get "You must first load the kernal" reboot again, "failed to query "capabilities or something like that", I don't remember exactly but something about using TAB for something, you hit TAB and it throws up about 10 lines of possible commands, but trying to run them, they all say incorrect usage, command not found, that kind of stuff. Sometimes using "Advanced options Kubuntu", going into BIOS and immediately exiting BIOS will cause it to start correctly, not always, sometimes it's just keep rebooting until it does load, and when it does actually boot, it takes longer than Windows ever did. Then there are a few minor things that I don't have just right, but I think that's my fault, so I won't mention them, until I've had a chance to try and correct them again.

I am sorry this is all over the place but right now I'm a little frustrated, as the OS froze up, and I had to reboot, that took almost 20 minutes. So what would you recommend? I hate to change distro's because I just really don't like any other, but I have to have something that works properly, and from what I can tell from beta testing Windows 11, it makes Windows 8 look like a good OS.

    How old is your hardware?

      Step 1
      Download the iso from here.

      Step 2
      The checksum is:
      11bca68f3366b11c7887666124e0155c6e2fbe1350ab14f25c d15299ac8f68b5 *kubuntu-20.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso

Use sha256sum to verify the checksum of that ISO. If the checksums do not match then redownload and try again until they do.

      Step 3
If the checksuums match then burn the ISO to a USB stick. There are several ways to do that.

      Step 4
Turn off your computer. Plug in the ISO and turn the computer on while holding F12, or what ever your computer key is that brings up the device boot menu. Boot from the LiveUSB.

      Step 5
Select the "Try" oiption and bring up the desktop. While it loads watch carefully the dialog which shows each component of the LiveUSB being checked for any error msgs. Return to Step 1 if you see an error msg.

      Step 6
While running the LiveUSB check out adding your wifi connection, print a page to test the printer, and generally try stuff out to see how things work. If you are satisfied then

      Step 7
Click the Install icon and begin the install. At this step DO NOT get trickly and try to work around the installer. Don't bother with encrypting the HD. Just do a plain vanillia GPT install. At this point I won't even suggest installing BTRFS, my favorite filesystem. Just use EXT4.

      Step 8
IF you do get errors anywhere along the way DO take specific notes. Write down exactly the errors your see, There are logs which include the specific errors. Using "dmesg | less" (journalctl can be used later) will list the errors and you can scroll up and down and use copy & paste into Kate to collect them. Post them here inside quote boxes so we can see what they are.

20.04.x is extremely stable and reliable, so I doubt your problems are due to the ISO itself.

        Basic info might help:

        Brand/model of the computer?
        cpu/graphics info?

drive(s) used and their types and layouts?

        secure boot enabled/disabled?

        Windows fast boot enabled/disabled?

        How recent is your bios?

I'd also suggest actually doing fewer things at once.

Stop at each problem area, and note down specifics. error messages, specific method, tool, or command used, specific webpage how-to used, things like that. Then see what we can do to help.
Your experience is not a common one, but that does not in any way discount what you are seeing.

I think one area that messes a lot of people up is the very common "I have followed at least 20 different sets of instrucions" part. We have zero idea of what you did, or if any of the things you did are even relevant to to you and your OS and hardware, and there is a good chance that one of these might actually mess things up, or different ones are stacking up and causing issues.

If you can start fresh, give us your hardware info and start with GreyGeek's advice to get started.

        SO
Start with booting, after you give us some specific info on your system first.

Brand/model of the computer?--Dell Inspirion Laptop

1TB mechanical drive, layout like this----(since I can't completely get rid of windows yet) -6 Dell partitions none bigger than 100mb, Don't know why that many is needed. sda1 Windows 10,(75G), sda 3 Kubuntu (75G), sda 2 is a shared drive ntfs with all my documents, pictures and such that I need to access from both OS's (750G). The numbers sda 1,2,3, might be a little different, but that's the layout. The shared drive is between the two OS's.

secure boot enabled/disabled? Windows fast boot enabled/disabled? -all disabled

Bios updated last time I was in windows, about a week maybe 2 weeks ago.

I'd also suggest actually doing fewer things at once. -That's actually how I like doing things, but sometimes you just have to attack a problem when it shows up, before you can finish what you were working on.

I'm having trouble getting a print out of the log file, tried dmsg in konsole, and apparently it's not installed, I've tried to install it, but konsole, synaptic, muon, and discover all said "Not Found". So I tried a couple other log readers, I did manage to get these two error's ps mouse "failed to queary capabilities", this is probably due to having a cheap mouse with no options, but the mouse works fine I wouldn't worry about this one yet. The other is X86 cpu SGX disabled by bios. This is one I didn't disable, I'm not sure what the status of SGX is, this budget pc may not have it? I don't even know what it is tbh.

"dmsg" was my typo, sorry about that. Should be "dmesg".
Another easier way to display hardware is to use inxi.
            Sudo apt install inxi
            Then do
            sudo inxi -Fxxx > inxi_putput.txt
and post that text file inside a quote block on your next message.

We need you to begin at step one in the set of instructions I gave in a previous msg, and tell us what happened (with screen captures or copy&paste if possible) at each step.

It's beginning to smell like you are having hardware problems. But, we can drill down on that at the appropriate time.

OK, I followed all these directions completely, same problems booting. Now I am also getting the error "English Language pack is incomplete". The pastebin# will be at the bottom. I don't know what else to say.

                  pastebin# paste.ubuntu.com/p/DTnWNNn7Dj/

                  Thanks

I suspect that the problem lies in how you do Step 7. This is where a lot of people get confused, especially if they have to create an efi boot partition. Or, they do something else that was not designed to be handled by the install software.

What did you do in Step 7?

Hey GreyGeek, on step 7 I did it just like you instructed, that's the way I have always done it. I have not reinstalled yet, because when I redownloaded from a different source, but still an official source, and booted into it, I was still getting the same problems with booting, and then I still wasn't able to get the printer working, and I could not get the USB wifi/Bluetooth adapter working. The printer does not make sense, it's actually a wifi capable and working in windows, but even hard wiring by usb, it still fails install. Funny you mentioned a hardware problem, I should have already thought about this. I have been using the usb wifi adapter because the onboard adapter went nuts while still on windows. I had to go in to device manager and disable/delete the onboard. It started off by just shutting down, and I could go in device manager, turn it off and back on and it would work a few more days. Then it slowly got worse, until it was at a point where when it shut off, it would lock up windows. Unfortunately the usb adapter I bought a few months before deciding to move back to linux, has no linux drivers, and nothing I tried would make it work. I managed to install a compatible driver based on information from the Realtek site. I could even find the Realtek wifi driver in the system, but it would not connect to the adapter. So I have another adapter ordered that has linux "drivers" included, I will have to compile them, but everything I need will be included.
