    graphic problem

    I've been using ubuntu occasionally for several years,
    and recently completely switched to linux/ubuntu (not new to linux)

    I also installed kubuntu 20.04, that other flavour, and it's also
    great, and it works perfectly on my laptop(acer).
    It also works on my desktop, almost. I have this pc that I'm using for
    many years, and I wouldn't say it's old, it just works(bought it in the shop where they build it from scratch)
    My screen is AOC.

    I'm to find out if the problem is permanent (because of hardware
    incompatibility) or it can be solved. In my opinion, it's matter of
    switching something off, but I don'ẗ have a clue where it is.
    So I'll start for support here(kubuntu forums).

    I can use kubuntu completely with this 'problem', but I frequently changing wallpapers. When I right-click and open 'Configure desktop', the whole thing stalls/halts (it opens window to wallpapers). It takes over 1 minute for mouse-click to respond, I want to discover wallpapers but it's too slow.
    It's the same when go into System Settings under Appearance category.
    It just stalls/halts. Everything else in System Settings works

    Any thoughts/idea what this might be, and where to look for solution?
    E.g. I've been searching the Google and it came up with 'Display and monitor' --> Compositor. I've changed some settings but without result.
    Thx.

    O.K., so lets focus on the desktop unit. Some system info would be helpful. There are lot sof CLI options, but the most concise first option is inxi. So enter
    Code:
    inxi -Fxxxz
    and copy paste the output to a CODE box in your reply here.

      cool command

      actually, mouse-click respond is not over a minute, but 10-15 sec or less
      Code:
      [FONT=monospace][COLOR=#000000]perl: warning: Setting locale failed. [/COLOR]
      perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
            LANGUAGE = "en_GB",

            LANG = "da_DK.UTF-8"
        are supported and installed on your system.
      perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

      NetGear wifi adapter is only installed on windows. I manged to install it on ubuntu 18.04, a year ago, but cant remember how to install it again(also on ubuntu 18.04) , so I'm using easier solution, tp link repeater that is wired to desktop, my modem/router is in another room

        That's an 11 year old CPU.

        Start by going to compositor and disabling it. Go to desktop effects and turn them all off.

        For wallpapers, most of thE KDE wallpapers are extremely high resolution. Download some wallpapers or picture that are no larger than 1280x720.

        Honestly, you are running a windows xp era PC here. Kubuntu may not be the best choice for you. You may need a lighter distro.

          To add to this, disable file indexing in System Settings as well. This will slow things down a lot, especially on a fairly new install.
          Uninstall snapd, another thing that will tax old systems.
          sudo apt remove snapd

            I've disabled compositor and desktop effects, and changed rendering backend(open gl 3.1, opengl 2.0 and xrender), each time restarting pc.
            No luck.
            I also disabled file indexing/search and removed snapd.
            Overall, the response in appearance and wallpapers is slightly faster, e.g. instead of loading one image, it loads two images at the time.
            Here's image of display-and-setting --> compositor.

            Click image for larger version

            I haven't yet pressed the button 're-enable opengl detection'.

            With higher probability, maybe it's not display/graphics. I continue to finding solution, it's becoming more interesting.

            I agree, it's old as greece . dunno but this comp. runs as if it was one of the latest. all applications and browsing pc, is instantly or almost instantly, it feels as no-delay. webbrowsing is fast, or faster (ok, that must be because of recent faster internet connection),
            it's like, it will run with no fuss for years to come.
            and graphic interface is/feels amazing, with this kubuntu version, maybe it's just me.

            (wao, I also installed wireless with no problem at all on both ubuntu and kubuntu. the only weird thing is that in driver manager --> additional drivers, it says 'NetGear, Inc(...) this device is not working'
            but it works perfectly. there is wireless icon in task manager and it says connected, and there are other connections.)
