    [ABANDONED] Wired Ethernet Difficulty

    I can no longer connect to any wired ethernet. I was previously able to connect but it has been increasingly unreliable and now I can't connect at all.

    I am pretty naive about networking.

    I have a couple of consumer routers and I can't connect to either of them by ethernet wire.

    It says "connecting" with the blue spinny then it says "deactivated" and I get the code: enp0s31f6

    I can connect to one router via wifi, but I cannot access the router GUI at 192.168.1.1. The other router is not configured yet because I can't get an initial connection.

    I have tried using the ethernet port on the computer and on the dock.

    Assistance appreciated...

    You haven't given us any information that we can work with. Make and model of your laptop? Type of Ethernet chip?
    You can use "sudo lshw" in a Konsole and paste the output into a "" box.

        Are you using the same ethernet cable in all scenarios? Have you tried using another cable? Cables and their connectors can go bad. If you tried it on two different routers, there is a likelihood that the cable and/or the network card are not in working condition.
        I was previously able to connect but it has been increasingly unreliable and now I can't connect at all.
        If you are trying to say that you noticed their was a gradual degradation of the connection over time and it eventually stopped:
        This indicates a physical hardware problem. Sometimes network cards go bad and quit working, especially in laptops in my experience. If your wireless is working, it probably has nothing to do with the network stack (software related to networking on the computer) or the router(s) itself.
        If after using another cable or if possible, another network card (usb dongle, etc), then move on to other possibilities. But the first troubleshooting priority is to make sure your cable and/or network card are physically working. If you do not have another cable, try to borrow one from a friend or neighbor.

        Another option is to boot from a live Linux DVD/USB and try connecting to the router that way. If the problems also exist in the live DVD, then it points to a possible problem with the cable and/or network card. Alternatively, you could also achieve this by booting into Windows (if you are on a dual-boot system) to see if the problem can be replicated there.

        You may need to seek help from a computer repair technician.

          I tried a different cable and no joy.


          I ordered a usb ethernet adapter and will try that when it gets here next week.

          Hardware question: is the ehternet port controlled by the Wireless LAN card?

            Most network devices are either wired or wireless, meaning your laptop likely has two network cards, one wireless and one wired. This means it is unlikely that the Ethernet port on the wired adapter would be controlled by the wireless adapter. On a side note, if you can get the problem fixed, you will be able to get into the router and set it up with the cable attached. Most often, you will not be able to set up the router using a wireless connection. If your router is not setup but is accepting wireless connections, be aware that your wireless access point may be open at this time. If that is the case, anyone that can scan your access point can also connect and use your network. You do not want to be responsible to your ISP if someone uses the connection for nefarious purposes.

            In the meantime, please consider seeing if you can get the wired connection working in either Windows (if that is possible) or a live DVD/USB image. Since you said it was working before, it likely is supported by your Linux installation and has appropriate drivers that work. If the issue is replicated in a different OS, you still cannot eliminate a hardware issue. If it works in a different OS, then it being a hardware issue can likely be eliminated. At that point, you would begin troubleshooting your software setup.

                      My desktop has the I219-LM with the e1000e driver.

                      Warning... a long story ... it might be wise to skip to the last paragraph.

                      This ethernet device has had periods of unreliability, after months of no problems. The connection just goes away for a while. The problem is a hardware fault which only some systems provoke. It seemed to be mostly manifested in server applications; I participated in a forum discussions with mostly server folks.
                      1. I can shorten how long it is down by disconnecting using the Networks applet, the reconnecting after about 30 seconds, but if I try that too soon it doesn't work.
                      2. It is much improved with the latest driver, though the driver can't fix it, just mitigate it.
                      3. It happens less often if it gets woken up regularly. I run

                      (192.168.1.1 is my router, the ping is a few ms). The log file is handy if a video is buffering, because I can check it to see if the pings are happening, and if they are the buffering is network congestion or a slow site.

                      I suggest installing "ethtool" if you haven't already got it, and running

                      This will show the version of the driver. For some reason the Linux kernel only has a driver from 2016, 3.2.6-k. The latest available is 3.8.7 (3.8.4 from the Intel download centre).

                      If you indeed only have the 3.2.6-k driver, the adapter's reliability will improve with the later drivers. These days, it is very easy to use it because someone's set it up on github: https://github.com/koljah-de/e1000e-dkms-debian. It has to be recompiled for every new kernel, and that github project sets up DKMS to do it automatically. It has worked flawlessly for over two years for me.

                      The early days with the driver meant recompiling manually on every new kernel, and then I learnt how to set up DKMS, which usually broke every new Kubuntu release. And the driver code got broken a few times by Linux header or compiler changes. But now with the e1000e-dkms-debian project it sails past release upgrades.

                      I have spent so much time stubbornly cajoling this POS. I would have been far better off just getting another NIC.

                            So it appears you are using the built in generic kernel driver for 5.13. I would suggest trying to install the proprietary Intel driver e1000e from the link that Mr. Little provided above.

                              For some reason I can't understand, in 2020 a change was made to the kernel source for the intel network drivers to remove the actual driver version, and just report the kernel version. Totally frustrating for someone trying to compare the version with Intel's... The kernel git log shows (what appears to me to be) a lot of activity on the kernel source, even up to a few days ago, so maybe the comparison is not valid. So the ethtool output is not useful, and neither is that from modinfo. (On my main 21.10 install ethtool and modinfo give the version nicely, but on my 22.04 clean install they don't.)

                              Given all that activity on the driver in the kernel, conceivably 22.04 would run better for you.
