Soundcard issue on HP 15 dylxxx laptop

Sometimes when I boot up my sound card is not detected. A hard shutdown is necessary when the problem occurs. Other times it boots and sound works fine. I am running a fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04.1, fully updated. The sound card is an HDA Intel PCH, Realtek ALC236 according to alsa.

    description: Audio device
product: Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller
    vendor: Intel Corporation
    physical id: 1f.3
    bus info: pci@0000:00:1f.3
    version: 30
    width: 64 bits
    clock: 33MHz
    capabilities: pm msi bus_master cap_list
    configuration: driver=snd_hda_intel latency=32
    resources: iomemory:400-3ff iomemory:400-3ff irq:148 memory:4000120000-4000123fff memory:4000000000-40000fffff

Anyone know how to fix this permanently?

Edit: The title was supposed to say sound card. I really need to proof read better...

sudo alsa force-reload does not fix the problem. If I kill pulseaudio I can get the system to reboot and then sound is back to working.
