[System] Lock Screen Time format, edits not changing?

Doing my normal settings changes... and getting correct 24H time, I change the QML in

    /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt6/qml/org/kde/breeze/components

    Clock.qml

Basically following, the below, but updating the path, as above,... since.. oh don't get me started... any way...

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/7831...24-hour-format

    No joy..

Edited, save , hit keyboard short to lock, no joy, still idiot time, log out, still no joy, idiot time, reboot, ditto..

    Any ideas

If it matters, this is a test in KVM, don't think that should matter, but...

    Hi rec9140,

do you want to change your time format from 12-hour to 24-hour?

Do you want 24 hours *only* on the lockscreen?

      If not:
In your region sessions, set the time to use the C option, or any other location that uses 24 hours.

It might take a short wait or session restart for this to take effect, iirc

Editing the qml, there may be caches not getting cleared, and of course potential updates overwriting your edit.

Note, if you are talking about the login screen, that is an entirely different anima from the lock screenl, and is independent from any user account locale settings.
You will want to go into your login screen settings and use the "Apply Plasma Settings" to have the login screen use *your* location settings here.

I have seen the lock screen use the system-level locale for the first time it is used, if it locks shortly after a login, but subsequent times it uses the correct user-specified format. I am thinking this has to do with this setup not having the login screen set to use the user's locale setting, but it is just a guess.

I also think this problem may be tied to Qt more than to Plasma specifically.

        Hi Claydoh,

Since this is a discussion about clock issues, I wanted to share my experience.

I experienced similar issues with the AM/PM and 24-hour clock formats across three different places in Kubuntu 26.04—the login screen, lock screen, and desktop clock were all showing different formats. However, your troubleshooting steps fixed everything perfectly. Thanks!

I am just curious about how the clock works. Right now, the login screen, lock screen, and desktop clock all show the time separately using AM/PM. If I change the clock from 12-hour to 24-hour time, shouldn't it change everywhere at once?

Why does Kubuntu keep these three places separate? Are they used for different reasons? i think In Windows, if you change the time format in one place, it changes everywhere automatically. Please correct me if I am wrong!

Mainly, the Login screen is entirely separate from the desktop environment as well as any specific user - this is why there is the "apply plasma settings" option in the SDDM settings.

Gnome's login manager is more integrated into Gnome, but no idea if it is tied to a specific user account. Most if not all other login managers are entirely separate from the desktop at all. Including SDDM.
(it seems that GDM in Gnome may behave the same way here.

This part is changing with Plasmalogin, but that won't be in Kubuntu for a bit yet. I am not sure if they intend to tie this to a specific user or not in the future, but as Linux is inherently multi-user, it might not happen.

For me, changing the time format in system settings does change the lock screen and the desktop clock format. It is just the login manager that does not automatically follow any changes made on the desktop by a user.
Just changing the desktop clock setting, of course, does not change it for the system. That is just for the clock widget. Note that the settings also has a link to the regional settings......
