[Post-Install] does anyone have the discover widget in their system tray set to Always Shown?

it seems that in the latest LTS release of kubuntu, the discover icon only appears in the system tray when there are updates pending... the rest of the time it is not shown and not even listed in the configure dialog for the system tray.

does anyone have the discover icon in their system tray full time, even when updates are not pending?

I have it in the Task Manager on the Panel.

Do you mean the notification area near the digital clock when you say system tray? If so, yes I do. I just took updates yesterday and it just showed up today a few minutes after I logged into my desktop.



I never set it to manually show all the time. I'm running with default settings.

In KDE Plasma 6 (including version 6.6.6), the Discover Notifier is designed to hide itself from the System Tray completely when no updates are available.

How the Update Notifier Works

• Dynamic Visibility: The update icon only appears in your system tray or the system tray settings list when there are pending updates waiting to be installed.

• On-Demand Behavior: Because it uses an on-demand display rule, you cannot manually force the default discover6-notifier widget to stay permanently visible in the tray if your system is fully up to date.

• Checking for Updates: Once new software or system updates become available, the icon will automatically surface in the system tray and trigger a notification.

My Kubuntu 26.04 is not an upgrade.

I see the update notifier in my openSUSE Tumbleweed 20260817 in QEMU-KVM. I haven't updated in a while.



All my sessions are Wayland. I had strange behavior in openSUSE Tumbleweed some time ago with a Flatpak application launcher appearing in the notification area and persisting after the application was closed. I switched to Wayland and that was no longer an issue.

That's all I can think of. I don't know if this info helps or not.

i consider this a regression because it takes away user control over what appears in the system tray.... if i wanted icons appearing and disappearing on their own from the system tray, then i will set them to As Needed.

yes that is not a "notification area", it's called the system tray widget

which hosts a number of configurable entries to show / or not show... discover notifier being one of them.
