    [Post-Install] x11... a traumatic ecperience

I have installed the x11 desktop but when I log out and tab my way through, there is no cursor, to select that session I get my wallpaper and no cursor or navigation panels of any sort which leaves me with one option, hard reboot. I have tried multiple times with the same effect.
    System:
    MSI X299 Tomahawk
    Intel i7-7800X 6 core
    MSI GeForce RTX4070 12GB

"Traumatic", hm? I have treated people who did experience traumatic events (e.g. because they came from a war zone) in the past. None of them used X11

      on topic:

like die.boer I don't quite get what your actual problem is:

is there no mouse cursor after you have logged into an X11 session,
or is there no mouse cursor in the SDDM log in screen,
      <additions>
or do you use multiple monitors and don't see SDDM anymore,
or has the resolution changed to something like 7680x4800 by itself in X11 so you cannot see any panel anymore after logging in,
      </additions>
      or …?

And perhaps change the thread title accordingly (to e.g. "No mouse curser after logging into X11 session")…

How did you install Kubuntu 26.06 LTS and the X11 session: fresh install and bonus step c. (Kubuntu 26.04 LTS - important things to do after an installation) or release upgrade from …?

I mainly use X11 in Kubuntu 26.06 LTS and I have not had any problems at all - aside from little annoying, graphical glitches like that the design of my preferred mouse cursor (Oxygen White) did not stay consistent.
      Adding it with
      sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme x-cursor-theme /usr/share/icons/Oxygen_White/index.theme 90
      and selecting it with
      sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
      solved this for me.

In Kubuntu if you cannot log out/reboot (and the system is not totally "frozen") you can e.g. always press
[Ctrl] [Alt] [Backspace] to get to the log in screen
      or press
[Alt] [Space] to start KRunner and type reboot
      by the way…

Try a fresh user account and see if it happens there

*Switching* between the two does seem to do odd things with screen/desktop setups in a few cases, such as virtual machines so other setups might also see oddities?
I do mean specifically switching between them, not just installing or running one or the other. Sort of like there are separate monitors, or monitor configs somehow.

        Let's gather some info:

        How did you do this?

My first second questions is: which Nvidia driver did you install post-install, if any?

The second third one: what is/was not working for you in Wayland? aka why switch? Any problems there might offer clues.

And #4, because I can't get all of my questions out in one go: Did you by any chance use the "apply Plasma Settings" from Wayland? This feature iirc used to only work properly in Wayland, not X11, though I have not tested this in some time. I thought that there was messaging to this effect when using the feature, which I do not see now. Just a random thought, here, though, as I assume the login was working fine previously?

And a fifth: any custom theming with SDDM?

sddm runs a separate instance of a display server, not the same one the desktop is using, so if you are seeing a broken login screen there might be other issues casung this than just switching the desktop to x11.

It this keeps happening, and it is too frustrating to log in from, you can still log in manually to either a wayland session or an x11 one:

hit ctrl-alt-F3 (or other number) to get to a vT.
        then use either:

        Code:
        startplasma-wayland
        or
        Code:
        startplasma-x11
You should at least be able to get to your desktop and do things.

Logging out here will send you back to that vT.

You've never had a multiscreen setup with two high-refresh rate monitors drop down to 60hz because you plugged in a TV screeen, I take it ? That was bloddy heck traumatic if you ask me!

            off topic:
I personally don't have any use for monitor refresh rates > 60 Hz, so: no… Well, OK, I have had some issues with SDDM when I additionally plugged in a TV, but I solved it with configuration files.

Give one a try some time, it isn't just for gaming. Thye difference between 60 and 75 you probably won't notice. 100Hz you might be able to tell the crispness difference.

But 120+, it is so much easier on the eyes, well, my astigmatic ones, at least. I miss having those 165hz screens, they weren't even expensive.

OK, OT , time to back to work lol

Yup, this has pretty much been a war zone setting up

The wallpaper on screen 1 is the same size and my 2nd screen is black at least until it starts searching for a device which it doesn't find

Some of my programs require x11

No on the "apply Plasma Settings" and I wouldn't know, I have never used log in/out in my life before this

I have no idea what SDDM is so it is highly unlikely I have altered it.
