Hi all. I was attempting to try out 26.04 on a nine year old Dell Latitude 7490 running an i5-8250U CPU. On chip Intel graphics. 26.04 hangs during live boot up, had to boot in safe graphics mode to actually boot. Bluetooth refused to pair a Logitech Marathon mouse. Kubuntu would not connect to WiFi. I may be a novice Linux user but even I know Kubuntu should be compatible with such a common and ancient laptop. So what am I doing wrong? 25.10 booted and connected everything just fine. I'm perplexed.

Your laptop should work with Linux: see e.g. Arch Wiki Dell Latitude 7490.
It is even certified by Dell for Ubuntu 16.04.
One thing that came to mind: do you use (legacy) BIOS boot or UEFI boot to start the life image?
And welcome to the forum.Debian LXQt • Kubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Linux Mint • Windows • macOS
Desktop: HP Elite SFF 805 G9 • Laptop: Apple MacBook Pro 13" • and others
important things to do after installation (24/26.04) • get rid of Snap script (20.04 +)
install traditional Firefox script (22.04 +) • install traditional Thunderbird script (24.04 +)

Did it show up in the Bt applet?Originally posted by Oli.Oops View PostBluetooth refused to pair a Logitech Marathon mouse
Same question as above.Originally posted by Oli.Oops View Post. Kubuntu would not connect to WiFi.
BT and WiFi are usually the same card; perhaps you have one of those that is poorly supported.
Is this a USB wifi dongle, or a built-in one?
The output of lsusb and lspci will provide us with information about both the Bluetooth and the Wifi chips. Realtek cards are a common culpri, but other brands can have issues as well.
PC makers are known to use a variety of different wifi cards, even if information out there leads us to think they have trusty Intel ones. Or the card was replaced at some point in its life.
Example output:

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue on a Core Ultra 235. On a ROG STRIX B860-I GAMING WIFI. It only works in safe mode, but as soon as it tries to switch to the graphics driver (iGPU), it freezes and stops working.
25.10 It works perfectly on this PC. Full work https://ibb.co/tyP8L9J
Version 26.04 is not ready for use. We're waiting for 26.04.01
Even Windows, when it's released, at least starts up and runs.

Linux is not WindowsOriginally posted by manull View PostEven Windows, when it's released, at least starts up and runs.
, and it is created mainly by volunteers, and often by people having to reverse-engineer hardware so they can create drivers with zero support or access from the manufacturers. It stinks sometimes, for sure.

Manull, I have an AMD video card and the PC freezes up as soon as the desktop appears. I was able to use the PC normally by plugging my HDMI cable into the motherboard and use the onboard graphics. The CPU video is also AMD. Seems to be an issue with the video card driver or something. Hopefully a patch flows through soon and I can switch back.

There will be daily builds but iirc they may not have much of use - there have been no new builds of Calamares (the installer) or the kernel stack, or linux-firmware
https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/
But at some point these daily builds will be 26.10, and there will be stuff breaking as new development starts, so be careful.Last edited by claydoh; May 08, 2026, 07:30 PM.Self-built: Asus PRIME B550M-K/Ryzen 5600GT/32Gb/Intel ARC B580 12Gb/KDE neon

Fedora 44 KDE even started up and is running without any issues for me and work fine. 26.04 freezes on igpu initialize, so I can't even open a terminal to see at what point it freezes. starting only safe mode but after restart stop work.Last edited by manull; Apr 29, 2026, 10:34 AM.
