[Software] Which new version to upgrade to

Reading that kubuntu 25.10 Questing Kuokka will its EOL at July 2026, to which kubuntu do I have to upgrade to before this date? Could not find the answer to this question on the
    regular kubuntu forums.

The release following Ubuntu 25.10 ("Questing Quokka") is Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which is scheduled for release in April 2026. As an Long Term Support (LTS) release, 26.04 will provide five years of security maintenance until 2030, following the 9-month support cycle of 25.10.

    Key Details Regarding the Upgrade:
    • Release Date: April 2026.
    • Upgrade Path: Users on 25.10 will be able to directly upgrade to 26.04 LTS.
    • Support: Ubuntu 25.10 is supported until July 2026.
Users of Ubuntu 25.10 ("Questing Quokka") can typically expect to see the upgrade notification for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS ("Resolute Raccoon") shortly after its release in April 2026. While the release is in April, the official upgrade prompt for in-place upgrades sometimes arrives after the first point release (26.04.1) in late July or early August 2026.
    • Release Timing: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is released in April 2026, with the 26.04.1 update, ensuring maximum stability for upgrades, arriving in late July or early August 2026.
    • Upgrade Path: 25.10 users, being on a non-LTS, six-month release cycle, can upgrade immediately once the upgrade path is enabled, often before the first point release.
    • Availability: While immediate upgrades are possible via command line or when early, some users might not receive automatic notification until the 26.04.1 release to ensure stability.
It is highly recommended to perform a backup before upgrading, as in-place upgrades from non-LTS to LTS versions can sometimes face delays to ensure stability.

Thanks for this answer! What about people, like me who are running kubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat LTS?
Is it simple to upgrade to a kubuntu 26.04 KDE version?

        AI Overview

Upgrading from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS to 26.04 LTS is a direct path, usually available after the 26.04.1 point release (typically August 2026). The standard method is using {Link: Software Updater https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7w54zkXDcOw} or running sudo do-release-upgrade. For pre-release access, use sudo do-release-upgrade -d.

        Key Steps and Considerations:
        • Backup Data: Always back up your data before upgrading.
        • Update 24.04: Ensure your current system is fully updated with sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade (or as I prefer, sudo apt full-upgrade).
        • Upgrade Command: Run sudo do-release-upgrade to check for and apply the upgrade.
        • Development Path: If the official path is not yet open, sudo do-release-upgrade -d forces an upgrade to the development branch.
        • Wait for 26.04.1: For maximum stability, wait for the first point release (26.04.1) in August 2026.
        • Third-Party Repositories: PPAs are disabled during the upgrade and must be re-enabled manually.
        • Alternative: A fresh installation using the 26.04 ISO is also a valid option.
