compositing is not supported on your system...

Now this is strange and I may have massaged this netbook further than someone can help me, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

Karmic netbook with kde 4.4.1sc and kubuntu-ppa/backports and x-swat repos enabled.

Desktop effects applet in system settings says compositing is not supported, enable desktop effects is checked but grayed out but the window says compositing is active and the "suspend compositing" button works as it should.

Compositing is definitely enabled but the because of the message in the subject line the individual effects tab is completely empty.

    Anybody got any ideas?

Sounds suspiciously like you are missing a package.

Maybe. What's strange is that the applet says compositing is not supported when it's definitely enabled.

~/.xsession-errors and xorg0.log haven't been a whole lot of help

So, what GPU do you have?

            Intel 945GM - it's a netbook.

I just got irritated and installed compiz instead - at least now I have control of my desktop effects again

Well that's interesting. While I have a full laptop, not a netbook, I have the same GPU as you:

Graphics: Card Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller X.Org 1.6.4 Res: 1440x900@59.9hz
              GLX Renderer Mesa DRI Intel 945GM GEM 20090712 2009Q2 RC3 x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version 1.4 Mesa 7.6
              I have full compositing functionality.

Re: compositing is not supported on your system...

I spent some time today reinstalling every darned package on this netbook - no joy. At least running compiz things appear to be a little snappier but it took me some time to figure out how to autostart emerald. Turned out to be this -

                    echo "USE_EMERALD=yes" >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager

Now I have the best parts of my old GNOME desktop with KDE functionality. All in all I'm happy with the change

if somebody still have this problem, I was able to fix it by changing CheckIsSafe from false to true, in ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc

Thanks! That fixed the same issue for me which is the laptop listed in SIG for those who have a similar issue.
