    File Associations Gone After Jaunty -> Karmic Upgrade

    I just upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty, and now my file associations are gone. What's more, if I open Dolphin and try to open for instance an .avi file. There's an empty open with context menu and if I choose open with... dolphin crashes. Anybody know what this might be?

    A quick 'n dirty way to fix this might be renaming the .kde (hidden!) directory.
    When restarting KDE this directory will be recreated with it's defaults.

    Would this cause loss of some other settings you can go into the renamed original and copy the missing bits back to the new one.

    Otherwise you can right-click the problematic file types and manually assign the appropriate applications in the Properties.

      As over on your ubuntuforums.org thread;

      Try renaming (or removing) your ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.local/share/mime directories. Then hit Alt+F2 and run 'kbuildsycoca4', alternatively do it from a terminal.

      Code:
      $ kbuildsycoca4
      That directory is where user-specific filetype/mimetype associations are saved. Renaming it should make it fall back to the system-wide settings in (the files in) /usr/share/applications.
      KDE, I heart thee.

        I'm not sure quite what I did, but the problem is fixed.
