No streaming of TV broadcasts (Windows media files) in Karmic?

Sorry if I am making a nuisance of myself, but what seemed to be a solved problem in Hardy is once again a problem in my freshly installed from scratch Karmic.

I am trying to play televised streams from the Norwegian and Icelandic national broadcasting companies. In Hardy, Mozilla will not play them, but from Mozilla, I can copy the URLs to VLC or KMPLAYER, they are able to handle them. Not so in Karmic. I also tried copying the links from Konqueror, with no better luck. It seems the url cannot be resolved by either of the players anymore.

I took approx the same steps that seemed to work for Hardy, except that I now used Gecko (default) instead of Mozilla mplayer plugin:

(Following guidelines on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) : Medibuntu
    (Following guidelines on http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Karmic) :
    repos: Libdvdcss2
    repos: w32codecs
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg (video / audio conversion)
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
    sudo apt-get install smplayer
    sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse
    repos: kmplayer
    repos: Gecko-mediaplayer

When I checked Software Management I saw that plugins-bad, plugins-ugly and gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg were now all installed.
I also have mplayer gnome, for some reason.

So what have I done wrong? I also tried copying the links from Konqueror, with no better luck.
    E.g.

It would appear that none of the players are able to resolve the url.
In Hardy VLC resolves it to: mms://http.0.muli.rs.ruv.is/video.ruv.is/4513225$1.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf

    Anybody out there??

Other than that, I have been playing around with Karmic for the last 10 waking hours and I am pretty impressed. There are a few things I have had to look for (because they are not where they were with KDE 3.5), but on the whole the system seems stable and efficient. Nevertheless, being unable to watch news broadcasts will mean I shall have to revert to Hardy, which is sitting on another partition. (I have faithfully followed the Grub discussions on this site

SORRY: In my initial post I quoted the url incorrectly. I have corrected it now.

Have you looked at "Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto" on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

I am lead to believe that it is possible to mix up Ubuntu (Gnome) plugins with Kubuntu (KDE) plugins and they can conflict. For example you mention Gstreamer - that's G for Gnome - streamer.

The howto should help you to sort thing out

An alternative source of streaming live TV is livestaion.com. It has a Linux .deb install

Thanks, Arochester. Yes, I studied the "comprehensive guide" when going through the motions for Hardy. I went through it again now, and it did indeed give me an idea: I threw out Gecko and installed "kmplayer gecko-mediaplayer" instead. But no go, My KMplayer simply does not behave as it does in Hardy. It will not accept any URL, it seems. Couldn't find any discouragement against gstreamer. I used gstreamer on Hardy.

Livestation: Yes, I have tried it, and it was fine to begin with, but started to behave poorly, so I kicked it out. Anyways, it did not accept Icelandic television.

        Anybody out there?
