I noticed this with intrepid and now karmic: when the screen blanks, there is faint pulsing of the back light so it never seems to be "off."
Perhaps unrelated, I sometimes can't get the screen to come back; however, if I hti Fn+the suspend key, then wake it up, I can get everything back.
