Lots of problems with upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 [solved]

From the start:

When the current grub screen appears, the keyboard is disabled until it times out and picks the default kernel.

When I start, there is some distortion when the Kubuntu sign appears with the bar that moves from left to right.

The very first time, this happens, if I get the kde environment working, two permanently moving purple bars will appear over any application I care to run. Then after a short time, the screen goes into a technicolour mess and I have to ctrl+delete to reboot.

I can't get Grub to update see here

A bit confused.

A few bits of info please as you have a couple of separate issues I think.

Computer specs including the type of video card you are using

Desktop or laptop?

How did you upgrade - was it over the internet, using the alternate cd as an upgrade source, a new install with a retained home, or a just a full install, with new home?

Important, if you have used a 9.10 cd the software on it is out of date. Following installation have you done a full update of the packages? In light of your other thread I imagine so but please confirm.

AMD 64 bit cpu (5 years old)

GeForce 6800 GT graphics card

Desktop computer

I upgraded from CD and selected the option to check the internet for update during the installation.

I have run "sudo apt-get update" and there is nothing to update

Having the wrong kernel caused all the problems.

I installed Grub 2 and 2.6.31 was used and everything works
