    [SOLVED] KDE 4.4 upgrade, black screen boot problem

    Hi,

    I upgraded yesterday my Kubuntu 9.10 from KDE 4.3.5 to 4.4. Now, I cannot start the system. After "Kubuntu" label, and the kdm starts to execute, a black screen appears and it stays blocked. However, when I start kubuntu in recovery mode, in console I can execute kdm and it runs without problem.

    What do I have to do to run Kubuntu without selecting recovery mode?

    I think one or 2 packages have not fully installed. From recovery mode command line type

    Code:
    dpkg --configure -a
    Because you are already root user you should not need to use sudo. You ought then to see the upgrade finish.

    Select resume normal boot option and you should load the desktop.


    When I upgraded I found that the package kde-workspace-bin was broken due to a mis-match of dependencies. If yours is update your repos and from within synaptic reinstall the broken package. Doing so should download the correct dependencies and fix it for you.

      Thanks Ian for you answer, but the command that you gave me it didn't work. I executed it but it didn't do anything. I reboot my PC, but the problem continues.

      Any other suggestion?

        Are you able to boot up from recovery mode and run synaptic? If so, on first running it, do you gat a message about broken packages?

          Ian!!!! Thanks, that works!!!! from recovery mode I executed synaptic, I selected "mark all upgrades" and then I applied changes, it found some package to upgrade and it installed them. After that, I rebooted the system and it entered to KDE with any problem.

                click the modify/eddit button in your originall post (the top one) and add solved to the Subject line
